MOBILE PHONE,……a HEALTH related discussion

MOBILE PHONE,………….a HEALTH related discussion

One of the most amazing inventions of the modern science is a little wonder called MOBILE PHONE. Though it began its commercial journey in early nineties, but its global acceptance and popularity was accentuated towards end of the last century as soon as the service became effortable by common
people. By the end of the first decade of twenty first century this small electronic device has captured the major part of our daily life. A multimedia handset in our fist means the world to us. Its attractive facilities are so useful in our daily needs that it is almost impossible to avoid using a mobile phone in this scientific era. A personal contact number is also very important as well.

Its benefits are really undoubted, but its silent side effects are also emerging to be a serious problem slowly. Hazards of using a mobile phone are coming to light after several years of research studies. The results are definitely not encouraging and many more serious conclusions are expected to come out of the studies that are still in progress.

Mobile phones are known to emit RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) which is constantly absorbed by our body parts. European Union standard limits the SPECIFIC ABSORPTION RATE (SAR) /EXPOSURE LEVEL to maximum of 2.0 watt/ kg body tissue. Many low quality cell phones are expected to exceed this limit and cause serious health troubles. Even the minimum SAR is supposed to cause major injuries in long run.

This RF is found to interfere with electronic medical devices like pacemaker, hearing aids etc. Studies found using mobile phone for long time seriously affects our major organs like brain, heart, kidneys etc. It is found to decrease the sperm count and sperm motility in male and is also a major cause of male impotency and sterility. Many studies revealed that talking in mobile phone for
10 minutes daily for a period of ten years may give rise to a SOL in brain. It is also found to seriously hamper the normal brain development in children and teenagers below 16years of age. Researches are also going on to find out the contribution of a cell phone in personality changes like poor concentration, increased irritability and psychogenic disturbances in prolonged users. Users in china are found recently to be so addicted in talking in cell phone that the fell very depressed if they do not receive a phone call one day.

So here come few guidelines about how you can minimize the risk of radiation while enjoying the benefits of a cell phone:

MOBILE PHONE,………….a HEALTH related discussion

♦ Use good quality branded products, with low SAR, and present with IEMI code.

♦ Replace your phone at regular interval before it starts exceeding the standard SAR.

♦ Maintain at least 15 cm. distances between the phone and the electronic medical device like pacemaker & hearing aid.

♦ Better to use a wired head phone when attending a call.

♦ Better to keep the phone away from body when not in use.

♦ Never allow the children to handle the cell phone.

♦ Discourage teenagers below 16 years about using a cell phone.

♦ Avoid unnecessary calling as per as possible.

BRUSHING & FLOSSING   (HC-03-JK-12.08.09)

Maintaining oral hygiene starts from proper cleaning of teeth & removal of food debris accumulates between the teeth as Plaque. Food debris combines chemically with salivary salts to form Plaque which is the starting point of gum infection i.e Gingivitis. So cleaning is the must & most common and popular method is “Brushing” & “Flossing”. This part of dental care is very important as this is a daily procedure and faulty methods applied for long period usually cause serious damage to teeth & gum.

Here comes few simple steps about proper “Brushing “ & “Flossing”:

Now discussing about simple steps of “Brushing” at first:

•    Head of a soft brush is placed parallel to the biting /occlusal plane with the bristles at the gingival margin at an angle 45 degree to the long axis of the teeth. The head of  toothbrush covers 3 teeth at a time generally.
•    Clean the out side of all upper teeth with short gentle vibratory back & forth strokes paying special attention to the areas where teeth & gum meet. This stroke is repeated about 20 times, then proceed to next three teeth.
•    Clean the inside surface of all upper teeth with the same short gentle vibratory back & forth strokes.
•    Repeat on the outside  & inside of all upper & lower teeth.
•    Cleaning the inner surfaces of both the upper & lower teeth is made easier by tilting the brush.
•    Brushing biting surface of both upper & lower teeth with short gentle vibratory back & forth strokes.
One thing you should remember that ideal brushing time is only 70 seconds.

Now comes for steps of “Flossing”:

•    Pull out 25 cm of floss.
•    Hold the floss in one hand & wind the free end to the middle finger.
•    Guide & place floss using your thumbs between upper teeth &  under gum line.
•    Remove harmful plaque by curving floss around each tooth & use up and down motion. Clean each tooth in this way separately & thoroughly.
•    Repeat the same procedure with lower teeth by using the index finger to guide the floss.
•    As the cleaning procedure goes in wind, the used floss on the middle finger with the free end  & pull fresh floss from the reel.
By this way we can keep inter dental area clean & healthy.
